A couple years ago i went to Cayo Coco Cuba. On the way from the airport to the resort, i saw wild flamingos. For most, that's no biggie. You can go to the zoo and see them without the travel or hassle. For me, it was a lost opportunity. I was a passenger on a bus that wasn't going to stop for one person to unpack their camera, and spend a couple hours. Get to the hotel, and drink was the mentality on the bus, and i was in agreement with that. But that being said, i regretted not taking a taxi during one of the days and finding the spot.
Last week i was in Cayo Santa Maria, and this time the travel from the airport to the resort was at night. So one day i took a taxi to find these pink birds. Well as you can see i found them. Only spent 20 mins on the side of the highway. Mainly for our safety. Driving is a unique skillset they have in Cuba. I'm not saying they are bad or worse than where i live, just different. Enough so, that 20 mins wasn't enough time for what i wanted, but enough to get something and still live to post about it. This is a composite of the same bird in flight, with three poses as it flew passed me.
Flamingos are not pink. They are born with grey feathers, which gradually turn pink in the wild because of a natural pink dye called canthaxanthin that they obtain from their diet of brine shrimp and blue-green algae. Pretty cool eh!?
